Banquets and Battles

For our July meeting we joined forces with the YAC groups from North Wiltshire and Southampton for a day at Danebury Hillfort.

It was quite a spectacular scene – some people had gone to a lot of trouble with their costumes.

After a good feast outside the hillfort, we all paraded around the top of the bank.

Then we had a go at various Iron Age type activities – making slingshots, painting faces, giving ourselves tattoos and making string from nettles.

Then to battle… We divided into two groups and tested out those slingshots.

But unfortunately for us, our enemies had the wind behind them!

Lucky we made those shields last month!

Dig the Romans

Our plans to go on a dig last month were foiled by storms and flooding, so we were especially glad to have another chance in October when we met near North Wraxall where Wessex Archaeology and a team of volunteers are excavating a Roman building.

It’s a long way from our normal stamping ground, so this time parents were invited to stay and join in.

First, Project Officer Phil Andrews took us around the bath-house and showed the different rooms where wealthy Romans once bathed and entertained their guests.

Then we had a chance to help, by excavating 2 test pits on a mysterious mound 100m further up the valley. Phil needed our help to find out what had been there. Was it a cistern to hold water for the bath-house, a water feature or perhaps an area where the builders prepared materials for building the bath-house? We weren’t there long enough to give an answer but Phil and his team will continue the work next week.

Armed with all this knowledge, we each had a go at drawing an artist’s impression of the bath-house as it would have looked. This month is the Big Draw, so we hope some of our pictures will go up on the national Big Draw website.

By 1.00pm the sky looked very grey – not what we had planned for our Roman picnic. But the rain held off just long enough for those who stayed to eat.

Download a page that explains how Romans used bath-houses like the one at Truckle Hill.

You can find out more about the excavation on the Wessex Archaeology website.

Preparing for battle!

Cat came armed with lots of shields this month. Fresh from the armourer, and ready for a coat of paint!

There were two styles to choose from, a rectangular Roman legionary’s shield and a circular Celtic one.

Destination Devizes!

This month we met up with members of Young WANHS (Wiltshire Archaeology and Natural History Society) at Devizes Museum.

Ali, their Leader, had arranged some really great things for us to do.

First we explored the amazing Bronze Age collection, mostly from the area around Stonehenge, then we had a go at making copies of some of the finds.

We used soft wire to make bracelets

Mesolithic Menus!

So how exactly did people survive in the Mesolithic (the name given to the period 8,000-4,000 BC)? That’s we set out to discover at this month’s meeting.

We did a quiz to find out what birds and mammals were hunted all that time ago, then thought a bit more about the equipment Mesolithic hunters would need to catch them.

Sometimes the best way to understand something is to experiment, so we made ourselves spears and fishing rods and tried them out on some unsuspecting fish!

Wattling and Daubing

This month we decided to try our hands as house-builders – medieval style.

First we needed to find out a bit about the way timber-framed houses were built six hundred years ago. A quiz helped us learn the names of the various types of timber frame and what sort of wood was used.

Gods, Goddesses and Gorgons

This month we investigated Roman gods and goddess. We started by looking at pictures of the gods and guessing who was who. After the introduction we split into two groups with two activities to do.

One group made a gorgon’s head amulet out of clay, just like the one Minerva wore on her armour, while the other group designed their own deity for their favourite thing.

Festive frolics for ravenous Romans!

Togas were flying at our Christmas Party in December as members played their favourite, energetic games wearing fabulous Roman costumes. Members only that is, since none of the leaders had dressed up, unless you count the fashionable modern Roman, wearing her sunglasses (which none of the YAC members did!).

Cally produced a wonderful feast – as usual. We are all very grateful to her and showed our appreciation in the best possible way – by eating everything!

Victorian Inventions

This month we looked at the Victorians and all their fascinating inventions. Firstly we turned into photo detectives to look closely at photographs taken in the Victorian period and tried to work out the date range for the photos and what inventions gave us the evidence for the date. Not as easy as you think!
